Everyone’s losing their shit over Instagram followers being wiped and all I can think is this would be a mint Black Mirror. Delete everyone’s followers and make everyone unimportant again and the Insta thots with no previous work experience have to go and work in McDonald’s lol

It appears that change is part of Instagram’s strategy to remove fake accounts from the platform.
Back in November Instagram posted a blog informing the users that the platform is limiting fake accounts and removing and accounts linked to apps offering followers or likes.
The Instagram blog said: “We’ve built machine learning tools to help identify accounts that use these services and remove the inauthentic activity.
“This type of behavior is bad for the community, and third-party apps that generate inauthentic likes follows and comments violate our Community Guidelines and Terms of Use.”
If Instagram identified an account as potentially fake, it sent an in-app message asking them to secure their account.
And it seems that last night, accounts that hadn’t secured their account were removed. Instagram added: “Since the early days of Instagram, we have auto-detected and removed fake accounts to protect our community. This update is another step in keeping Instagram a vibrant community where people can connect with the people and things they love.”
